A prolific artist who’s performed at the Kennedy Center and as a featured soloist for Mel Tormé, among many others, will headline Jazz on the Green at Six Bends presented by Cushman & Wakefield Commercial Property Southwest Florida at Top Rocker Field in Fort Myers. Saxophonist extraordinaire Jeff Rupert and his quintet will grace the stage at the can’t-miss fundraising event that runs from 5-9 p.m. Saturday, March 10.
The “dynamite” Rupert, as Tormé called him, played on Benny Carter’s Grammy-winning “Harlem Renaissance” album and on dozens of recordings alongside such leading lights as Sam Rivers, Diane Schuur and Maynard Ferguson. He’s the leader of The Jazz Professors, a group with top JazzWeek charting hit albums. Rupert, who’s played shows in Europe, Japan, Taiwan, Israel, South America, Australia and New Zealand, is the director of jazz studies at the University of Central Florida and founder of Flying Horse Records.
Joining him on the bill is upright/electric bassist Brandon Robertson, who performed at the inaugural ceremony for Gov. Rick Scott and at the legendary Dizzy’s Coca Cola Club in New York City. Last year he appeared as the headliner at the International Jacksonville Jazz Festival in Jacksonville, Florida. Also playing Jazz on the Green is the local Fort Myers Greenwave Jazz Band.
The dazzling music will serenade the sunset over a crowd dressed all in white and dining on heavy hors d’oeuvres from Artichoke & Company, Gather, Metro Diner, Sweet Melissa’s Café and Simply Southern Catering. Local craft beers from Rollin’ Taps and domestic beers from Budweiser will be available at the outdoor event, as will wine provided by Artichoke & Company. American Barrels is supplying complimentary bourbon tastings to VIP ticketholders.
All of this will benefit Make-A-Wish of Southern Florida, with the goal of raising enough money to fulfill the wishes of two Southwest Florida children suffering from critical illnesses. VIP, Premier and General Admission Tickets are now on sale at https://jazzonthegreenatsixbends.eventbrite.com. Everyone who buys a ticket will automatically be entered to win one of two one-week rentals of either a Jaguar or a Land Rover.
